The Treasurer of the Navy originally called Treasurer of Marine Causes was a civilian officer of the Royal Navy responsible for all Naval Finance he administered the Navy Pay Office. He was a member of the Council of Marine then later the Navy Board but his office was autonomous of the Navy Office the post existed from 1524 to 1832.
1) History
Originally established in 1524 the first post holder was William Gonson he held the office for twenty years until 1544. He was a member of the Council of the Marine then later Navy Board, although a member of the board he gradually withdrew during the seventeenth century from the Board's day-to-day affairs and his office, and the Navy Pay Office, came to be regarded as entirely separate from the Navy Office, this was partly due to him being also accountable to the Treasury Office later called the Treasury Department headed by the Lord High Treasurer from whom he received funding. He was responsible for the direction and control of Naval Finance of the Royal Navy. The office was a political appointment, and frequently was held by up-and-coming young politicians who would later go on to hold more important positions. Before 1832 all accounts and finance were dealt with by a number of different offices and officials the Treasurer being one of them. Following reforms within the Department of Admiralty all existing financial departments and offices were centralized into the single Department of the Accountant-General of the Navy, though he survived the re-organisational changes of 1832 his office was abolished in 1835 and his duties were transferred to the Office of the Paymaster General.
