The Naval Secretary also known as the Naval Secretariat is senior Royal Navy appointment that was established in 1910 to provide a direct line communication between the First Lord of the Admiralty and the Board of Admiralty members. The office was was administered by the Naval Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty until 1964 when its reporting structure changed following the abolition of the office of the First Lord and the naval secretary would now provide secretariat support to the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff.

1) History

The Naval Secretariat was established in 1910 to provide a direct line communication between the First Lord and the Board of Admiralty members. The office was was administered by the Naval Secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty until 1964 when its reporting structure changed following the abolition of the office of the First Lord and the naval secretary would now provide secretariat support to the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff. From 2010 to 2012 The Naval Secretary held the dual post of Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Personnel). From 2012 to present day the Naval Secretary simultaneously holds two other titles Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Personnel) and Flag Officer, Maritime Reserves.

2) Duties

As of 2018 the Naval Secretary provides the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff with advice on all matters relating to Flag and General Officers' appointments.
