Late Middle English: from Old French Admiralte, from Arabic Admirail ‘emir, leader’ (see admiral).
Definition
- A court dealing with maritime questions, offenses, etc.
- In the UK the government department that administered the Royal Navy, now incorporated in the Ministry of Defence and current only in titles.
- The office or jurisdiction of an admiral.
- The officials or the department of state having charge of naval affairs, as in Great Britain.
